Code of Conduct

Respect and etiquette
  • Respect instructors and partners: Address instructors with titles like "Professor" or "Coach" and treat all training partners with respect.
  • Be humble: Check your ego at the door and be coachable. Win graciously and learn humbly from both wins and losses.
  • Be punctual: Arrive on time for class. If you are late, wait for permission to join the mats.
  • Zero tolerance for disrespect: Discriminatory jokes and speech based on politics, religion, gender, or race are not tolerated. An athlete's conduct is expected to be integral both on and off the mat.
  • Inclusivity and camaraderie: Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes building a unified team environment. Discussing divisive topics can disrupt this camaraderie and exclude members, damaging team unity.
  • Report misconduct: For serious issues like harassment or bullying, gym rules require reporting the misconduct to a coach.
Be mindful of your strength: Adjust your intensity to your training partner's skill level and weight, especially with less experienced and smaller size individuals.

Listen during instruction: Sit or stand with good posture during demonstrations and keep talking to a minimum. No laying down or side conversations.

Show gratitude: Thank your partner after each roll.

Hygiene and safety
  • Maintain personal hygiene: Shower before training, use deodorant, and ensure your breath is fresh.
  • Keep your uniform clean: Wash your gi and other gear after every class. A clean, odor-free gi is mandatory.
  • Trim your nails: Keep fingernails and toenails short and trimmed to prevent scratches and injuries.
  • Rash Guards are mandatory: Where a rash guard under your Gi during Gi class and as a top during No Gi class. Nobody wants to twist a finger on your t-shirt or get a mouthful of chest hair when training.
  • Remove jewelry: Take off all jewelry, piercings, and other items that could cause injury.
  • Keep feet clean: Wear footwear off the mats and clean your feet before class if necessary.
  • Cover wounds: Any cuts or abrasions should be completely covered with bandages.
  • Stay home when sick: Do not train if you are ill or have a contagious skin condition.
  • No shoes on the mat: Shoes track dirt and bacteria onto the mats. Wear them only in designated areas.
  • No striking or slamming: BJJ is a grappling art. Striking and slamming are forbidden on the mats.
  • Respect the tap: Tap out immediately when your partner submits you, either verbally or physically.

Any violations of code of conduct may result in removal from class or academy depending on severity and frequency of violation.
